I built these in 3Delight on the default Daz textures -- I assume they'll convert gracefully to Iray, but I really don't know enough about it to do the conversion myself. Sorry!

For those of you who've monitored Krystal's development since the initial announcement in 2007, the version 1.3 update offers a number of advantages over the original, along with new features. I'll gloss over the high points:

- Improved shoulder and leg legging for more realistic posing
- Integrated V4/G2-style magnet deformers, with Python script and magnetize pose
- New head and body morphs
- Joint-offset dials for improved compatibility with V4, M4, and A3 poses
- Posable whiskers, for characters that need them
- Updated DAZ|Studio material support
- Support for Studio's level-of-detail (LOD) feature
- Updated DMC file for Mimic and Studio lipsync

Just thought I'd share a little something I find useful. 

It's UV mapped so you can apply any image of choice to add some zest to the background.

It's a DS prop but you can grab the obj from the Geometries folder if you want to import elsewhere.

Invented by W.K.L. Dickson and Herman Casler in 1894, the Mutoscope was one of the earliest forms of motion picture technology. While at heart a hand cranked giant flicker book, the makers where smart enough to offer an incredibly wide choice of genres. Though the most popular form attracted the kind of comments we see today about Poser/Studio art...

.."scenes to tempt the depravity of manhood and the curiosity of youth" (The San Francisco Call, April 1899)

...which lead to these becoming known as "What the Butler saw" machines.

In today’s 4K UHD world such technology seems to be redundant, which is a real shame as these machines have a wonderful Victorian/SteamPunk feel. That made me wonder what if you could make a digital version, a machine that converged 3D art with Victorian technology. Obviously with 3D modelling that’s easy enough, but also what about a fully working real world version. So I made both :) 

The 3D version comes in Poser(5+) and Daz Studio flavours. On both models, just like on the real thing the doors open/close (expertly rigged courtesy of the nice people at Vanishing Point) and the sign can be moved up/down or hidden with a show/hide pose. While the model comes with shaders (texture based on Poser), it’s also been mapped with loads of material zones. So just like on the real machines, you can easily use different shaders/colours on different parts.

The screen is also seperately mapped so you can apply a video texture to it as well as images. 

It comes in two versions, a traditional one with working handle, coin slot and pseudo interior. Plus a digital version with buttons with a different interior. The latter more accurately representing my real one.

Unlike the original metal versions, my Mutoscope is constructed of wood (mostly recycled so nice and green) using a variety of techniques from routing to hand carving. Contained within is a museum grade Media Player with 7in screen, where viewers select a video with a button or remote control. There’s also an IR sensor inside so the machine can auto-play if someone walks past it.

Sound is full stereo audio, via headphones or speakers. The player can also play MP3's without video, meaning this can also be used as a giant, and rather decorative, speaker.  

As the playlist/button controls are already coded with special software, updating videos is as simple as copying MPG's onto a compact flash card. Or it can be updated via USB or FTP on a wired network. Plus the machine has been designed with a pull out frame so that the player can quickly and easily be replaced with something like a bluetooth controllable android tablet or IPad.

To protect the player screen clear acrylic sheet is used, but if you replaced that with a 10in Lenticular magnifying lens (commonly sold in pound stores as an aid to enlarge mobile-phone screens) in conjunction with a Windows based tablet, then you could even run Poser or Studio on it.

A fantastic GPU-accelerated ray-trace renderer named Cycles has been added to recent versions of Blender.

McjTeleblender is a kit of scripts designed to quickly export Daz Studio scenes, even animations, and render them in Blender using Cycles.

As I’m procrastinating on my other tutorial, I thought I’d do a quick tutorial on how to create a V4 clone for G8F. The V4 clone is very strange, in that we must create a V4 shape of G8F in the T-pose rather than the A pose of the other clones. 

Creating this clone is rather straightforward: we must use a pre-existing figure’s V4 clone and “copy” its shape over to G8F.

Please note that this clone is purely meant to save time for future renders, as it is effectively the same as fitting V4 clothing to Genesis, then fitting again to G8F. However, this can be adapted to transfer other clones as well.

There's also another easy way to transfer the G8F shape to Genesis 3/2/1, which I can post if enough people are interested.

And finally, please let me know if you have any trouble with this tutorial, or if there are any typos. :)

Preparation:

1. Load Genesis or any figure you own that has a V4 clone. This tutorial uses Genesis because it comes with the V4 clone with additional purchases.

         Note: You must load Genesis and not Basic Female!

2. In the Parameters Tab, click on the hamburger button and make sure “Show Hidden Properties” is checked.

3. In the Parameters Tab, click on Genesis/Hidden/Clones.

     a. Locate the Victoria 4 morph. Click on the gear and select “Parameter Settings…”

     b. Uncheck “Locked” and “Use Limits”, then hit Accept.

     c. Dial the Victoria 4 morph to 1.

4. Set Genesis to Base Resolution, then export it as an OBJ. Name it such that you can identify it as the Victoria 4 shape.

Creating the clone:

1. Load “Genesis 8 Female Dev Load”.

2. Fit Genesis onto Genesis 8 Female. Select Genesis/Full-Body in the Autofit configuration.

         Note: Depending on how many Genesis Assets you have, this may take a while to process.

3. Confirm that Genesis now looks like Genesis 8 Female. If Genesis does not have female features, then the incorrect auto-fit setting was used.

4. Once it is fitted, hide Genesis 8 Female, then export Genesis as an OBJ. Name it such that you can identify it as the Genesis 8 Female shape.

5. Delete Genesis, then load a fresh copy of Genesis into the scene.

6. Select Genesis, then select Edit/Figure/Geometry/Update Base Geometry. Select Update Vertex Positions, then load the Genesis-G8F shape.

7. Unhide Genesis 8 Female. Both Genesis and G8F should resemble each other now. Under the Transfer Utility, transfer Genesis into G8F using the following settings:

         - Source: Genesis/Default

         - Target: Genesis 8 Female/Default

         - Projection Template: None

         - Only check “Smart Left/Right Filtering”, “Use Near Vertices”, and “Weight Maps”

8. Fit G8F onto Genesis.

9. Using Morph Loader Pro, load the Genesis-V4 shape onto Genesis.

10. Dial in the Genesis-V4 shape on Genesis, and G8F should follow the morph exactly. 

11. Hide Genesis, then set G8F to Base Resolution and export it as an OBJ.

Loading the Clone:

1. Clear the Scene and load a fresh copy of “Genesis 8 Female Dev Load”.

2. Using Morph Loader Pro, load the G8F-V4 shape just created. Make sure the Property Group is set to Hidden/Clones.

3. Select Genesis 8 Female. Under the Parameters Tab, enter Hidden/Clones.

4. Enter the properties of the newly created clone morph, then change the Type to Modifier/Clone.

5. To test, try fitting a full-body V4 item to G8F. The V4 clone should now appear.

Saving the Clone:

1. To save the clone, select Genesis 8 Female then File/Save As/Support Asset/Morph Asset.

2. Under Genesis 8 Female, drill down to Hidden/Clone and select the V4 Clone. Choose your library or any appropriate save location, then hit Accept.

3. To confirm that it is saved, close and reopen DAZ Studio, then load G8F and check under Hidden/Clones.
